Cuba Marsh — AM walk with Zola
Closest real trail from home. 6:30–sunset, dogs on-leash on trails only. Fog lifts, then it’s the easy “everyone including Zola is outside” start before festival crowds.
Sat 5 – Mon 7 Sep 2026 · base: 25 Seneca, Hawthorn Woods. Outdoor-first because NWS is dry and 76–80°F. Indoor listed as rain/crowd/kid-energy backups — not because weather needs it.
Full NWS 7-day → · pulled 5 Sep ~10:20 AM CDT. Fog burns off Sat morning — don’t start outdoor stuff before ~9:30.
Cuba Marsh — AM walk with Zola
Closest real trail from home. 6:30–sunset, dogs on-leash on trails only. Fog lifts, then it’s the easy “everyone including Zola is outside” start before festival crowds.
Long Grove Irish Days — the local win
Free, historic downtown, kids craft tent, live music, food. Dogs are part of the event (Irish Dog Contest is Monday). Sat lineup: Irish dance noon, Shannon Rovers 2:30, kilt-legs 3:00, Larkin & Moran 4:30, Without U2 6:30. Stay as long as energy lasts.
Lakewood Off-Leash — Zola’s 66 acres
Wauconda. Fenced meadows + trails. Open 6:30 until 7pm or sunset. Annual or daily permit required (Passport Parking app — no cash box). Maintenance closures are Thu mornings, so Saturday is clear.
Big Bear Lake paved loop — home-base walk
The loop you already use. 20–40 min before dinner or after Long Grove. No permit, no parking fight. Good if the festival is too much people-noise for Zola.
Yard grill + pickleball at Indian Trails
Weather is cookout weather. If Anton/Alice want to hit balls, Indian Trails (Mundelein) is the family court you’ve used. Zola can do home yard better than a busy court.
Chicago Jazz Festival — leave Zola home
Free, Millennium Park, 11am–9pm. Pets are not allowed in Millennium Park (service animals only). Only go if someone stays with Zola. Sat headliner at Pritzker: Miles Electric Band 7:45–9pm. Parking + Labor Day crowds — this is a commitment, not a pop-in.
Navy Pier — last summer fireworks, 10pm
Final Saturday show of the season, 10pm, free. Pier allows leashed dogs in outdoor common areas; indoor attractions = service animals only. 10pm is late for Alice/Anton + a long drive home. Only worth it if you’re already downtown (Jazz Fest) and kids can handle a late night. Fireworks noise: skip Zola if she’s boom-shy.
AMC Hawthorn 12 — indoor reset
Closest real indoor for the kids if legs are done. Leave Zola home. Check showtimes same-day — holiday weekend fills.
Lambs Farm — Sat only (closed Monday)
Libertyville, 10am–4pm Tue–Sun. Animals + kids is a good Anton/Alice hour. Closed Labor Day, so if you want it, it has to be Sat or Sun. Don’t bring Zola to a working farmyard.
Indoor mall backup — Hawthorn / Deer Park
You don’t need this for weather. Use it if someone is overstimulated, needs AC, or wants a short food-court / bookstore hour. Outdoor patio spots nearby can take Zola; the mall itself generally cannot.
Bike the Drive — only if you already registered
Sun 6:30am start, LSD car-free, 30-mile loop you can shorten. Helmet required. “If you pedal you pay.” Not a spectator stroll, and not a dog event. LSD reopens to cars ~11:30–12. Only do this if tickets are already in email (e-tickets went out Wed 9/2). Otherwise skip — Lake County is nicer with Zola today.
Long Grove Irish Days — day 2
Outdoor Mass 10am, then dance / Gavin Coyle / Joyce Boys. Shannon Rovers 3:30. Dirty Wellies 5:00, The Tooles 7:00. Same dog-friendly downtown as Saturday, usually a little less frantic than Sat night.
Independence Grove Off-Leash — pond swim
Separate entrance on Milwaukee north of Buckley — not the main IG visitors center (that preserve bans pets). 30 acres, pond. Same permit as Lakewood. Watch Zola at the water. If you continue onto Casey / Des Plaines River Trail, leash up; do not cut through the main preserve.
Des Plaines River Trail — leashed miles
After the off-leash pond, a crushed-limestone stretch is the “family bike + dog walk” combo. Tick season is a second peak in early fall — stay on trail, check everyone after.
Jazz Fest last day — leave Zola
Same Millennium Park ban. Last day, 11am–9pm. Only if Sat didn’t happen and someone is on Zola duty. Don’t stack this with Bike the Drive — that’s a 6am downtown call plus a 9pm show.
Home yard / grill — actually use the weather
76 and sunny is the backyard day. Zero parking. Zola gets the acre. This is the highest-quality “family + dog” hour on the whole weekend if downtown sounds like work.
Volo Museum — indoor cars / kitsch
Open daily 10–5, last entry 4. Anton-bait (cars, odd exhibits). Not a dog place. Save for a rest-the-dog block, or Monday if Long Grove is enough outdoor.
Lambs Farm — Sunday is the last chance
Closed Monday. 10–4. Pair with IG dog park in the other direction only if you split the family (one adult + Zola at OLDA, one adult + kids at farm) — that’s a lot of cars for one afternoon.
AMC Hawthorn — evening indoor
Same as Sat. Walk Zola at Big Bear first (the pattern you’ve used before a show), then theater.
Evening Big Bear loop + early night
Low 61° overnight. Easy wind-down. Monday’s Irish Dog Contest is the thing to be fresh for if Zola’s entering.
Long Grove — Best Irish Dog Contest 1:15pm
This is the weekend’s cleanest Zola + family overlap. Contest + winners 1:15–1:45. Shannon Rovers 2:00. The Boils 2:30–4. Register the day-of on site (Visit Lake County notes same-day signup). Water + shade for Zola; 79° is fine, not brutal.
Lakewood OLDA — morning before the contest
Burn energy so Zola is sociable, not explosive, at 1:15. Open 6:30. Don’t overdo heat — morning is enough.
Home Labor Day cookout
After Long Grove. SE wind 0–10, mostly sunny 79°. This is the default if anyone is done with people.
Cuba Marsh — second easy trail
If the contest was plenty of downtown-village energy, this is the quiet reset. 6:30–sunset.
Indian Trails pickleball
Kids + adults, holiday morning before Long Grove. Don’t bring Zola onto the court; home or car-shade if it’s a short hit.
Volo Museum — open Labor Day 10–5
One of the few solid indoor attractions that is actually open Monday (Cultural Center is closed; Lambs Farm is closed). Last admit 4pm.
AMC Hawthorn — holiday matinee
Indoor if Volo feels like too much driving after Long Grove. Confirm times that morning.
Schaumburg Septemberfest — only if you want a carnival
Sat–Mon, free, 10am–10pm, Town Square. Bigger and louder than Long Grove. Not worth it unless the kids specifically want carnival rides — you already have a better village fest 12 minutes from home.
Board games / movie at home
The honest indoor. Weather doesn’t force it; energy might. Zola stays in the picture.
Paper Tiger — only if crew + boat are actually free
SE 0–10 kt, mostly sunny 79° is a gentle lake day, not a race day. Family sunset-sail pattern (dock pickup, hard-in before dark) only works if Irshad/calendar is actually open — don’t assume. Zola does not belong on a Labor Day harbor circus. If the boat isn’t booked, Long Grove + yard wins.
